Awakening : One Mans Battle With Darkness
$10.00When Blumhardt, a nineteenth-century pastor from the Black Forest, agreed to counsel a tormented woman in his parish, all hell broke loose literally. But that was only the beginning of the drama that ensued. Zundel s account, available here in English for the first time, provides a rare glimpse into how the eternal fight between the forces of good and evil plays itself out in the lives of the most ordinary men and women. More than that, it reminds us that those forces still surround us today, whether we are awake to them or not.”

Company Of The Creative
$39.99A History of Biblical Preaching from the Old Testament to the Modern Era) contends that in the modern world “casual television and junk reading dilute the content of the mind…and the interior life has become bloated with malnourishment.” In addition, he says, many Christians believe that the Bible contains all the truth they need about the world, so they do not read beyond the Bible. The author maintains, however, that “all Christians need to read broadly, deeply, and copiously.” He asserts that reading is vital to an engagement of the mind with serious issues of faith and culture. Reading, he notes, opens us to insights about issues and people; it stimulates the imagination and introduces us to beauty. In a series of insightful chapters, Larsen provides short, thematic summaries of more than 500 thought-provoking works of fiction, poetry, drama and biography that incite the imagination. He arranges the chapters according to historical period; for example, in “Identifying Our Assets from the Middle Ages,” Larsen ranges over Augustine, Jerome, Dante, Aquinas, Bernard of Clairvaux, Beowulf, Chaucer and the Arthurian legends. In each of his summaries, the author is attentive to the lessons that Christians can take from these writings. Such interpretive lenses sometimes cloud Larsen’s summaries, however. For instance, he remarks that “the actual state of Willa Cather’s spiritual life is questionable…and whether she had truly come to terms with God at her death is a matter of conjecture.” Such remarks fail to consider the power of the writing and turn readers away from the very fiction that Larsen urges them to read. While his book is an admirable attempt to recover the importance of reading for the Christian life, Larsen’s comments are often too narrow to be helpful.

Spiritual Torrents
$10.95120 Pages/17 Chapters
Additional Info
SPIRITUAL TORRENTSThis book is a spiritual autobiography in which Jeanne Guyon likens her life to a torrent making its way out of the high mountains down into the canyons and chasms of life, passing through many experiences until finally coming to the spiritual experience of death. From there the torrent experiences resurrection and a life lived in concert with the will of God while still going through many stages of refinement. At last the torrent finds its way into the vast, unlimited sea. Even here the torrent does not totally come to be one with the vast ocean until it has once more passed through final dealings by the Lord.
The reader will find this book to be the saga of one believer’s journey with Christ. It does not serve as a pattern for any other life, but simply allows the reader to see how Guyon viewed the Lord’s work in her life. Nevertheless, this is one of the greatest books ever written on the subject of the cross as it works in the life of the believer.

Thomas Merton And The Monastic Vision A Print On Demand Title
$25.99Though the outlines of Thomas Merton’s life are generally known to his many readers, the details of his spiritual development are less familiar. Taking up where Merton’s own Seven Storey Mountain ends, this penetrating biography by Lawrence Cunningham explores Merton’s monastic life and his subsequent growth into a modern-day spiritual master.
Cunningham shows that Merton’s prolific writings and his continuing influence can only be understood against the background of his contemplative experience as a Trappist monk. “If one does not understand Merton as a monk,” writes Cunningham, “one does not understand Merton at all.”
Following the trajectory of Merton’s life, starting from his entrance into the Abbey of Gethsemani, Kentucky, in 1941, Cunningham highlights the development of Merton’s monastic life against the cultural background of the American experience and the vast upheavals in the Roman Catholic Church. This unique approach clearly reveals the paradox of Merton’s life. Here was a person deeply involved in the cultural struggles of his day despite having made a conscious decision to draw away from the world in silence and solitude. With both pen and voice, Merton construed to face the most seething issues of the century, including the antiwar and civil-rights movements. Equally intriguing was Merton’s dialogue with Zen Buddhism, a figurative and literal journey to the East that ended with his death in Bangkok in 1968.
Adding to the interest of this balanced and reliable biography is a foreword by Father Timothy Kelly, the current abbot of the Abbey of Gethsemani, who was himself a novice under Merton.

On Pilgrimage
$25.99These diary entries written by Dorothy Day in 1948 provide an intimate look into Day’s personal life as well as essential background for understanding the Catholic Worker movement, which she founded. In this book, Day writes about all facets of her life. Yet whether describing her visits to her daughter’s farm or the writings of the saints, a common theme emerges, namely, the gifts of God’s love and our need to respond to them with personal and social transformation. The concerns of the Catholic Worker movement are no less vital in our day: the disenfranchised poor, the benefits of the meaningful work, the significance of family, the dangers of increasing commercialism and secularism, the decline of moral standards, and the importance of faith. Available for the first time since it was originally published, this edition includes a foreword by Michael O. Garvey and an introduction by Mark and Louise Zwick that gives an overview of Day’s early life and her commitment to the Catholic worker movement.

Pilgrim Souls : A Collection Of Spiritual Autobiography
$33.95What is the source of personal writing? When do we begin to consider our own lives worthy of a story? These powerful and passionate selections of spiritual autobiography do not merely represent a vital literary tradition; they bring together fifty-eight writers whose search for truth and understanding has spanned over two millennia and several continents.
From Saint Augustine and Rabi’a to T. S. Eliot and Kathleen Norris, each of these autobiographers tells the story of the inner life as a spiritual quest. Although separated culturally, historically, and linguistically, they are united by their efforts to respond to Socrates’ challenge to “know thyself.” In four parts this insightful collection includes works by:
* Wanderers and seekers, like Leo Tolstoy and Thomas Merton, who feverishly explore many experiences and world views
* Pilgrims and missionaries, like Anne Bradstreet and David Livingstone, who unwaveringly pursue God and holiness in lives of self-sacrifice
* Mystics and visionaries, like Julian of Norwich and Annie Dillard, who discover the ecstasy of epiphany in a life of contemplation and seclusion
* Scholars and philosophers, like Simone Weil and Blaise Pascal, who seek to ground spiritual conviction in a rational certitude.Strong, deep, and enduring, the selections in this illuminating anthology remind us that “the unexamined life is not worth living” and speak to us with an immediacy that transcends time and space.

Gift Of Peace
$17.00Joseph Cardinal Bernardin’s gentle leadership throughout his life of ministerial service had made him an internationally beloved figure, but the words he left behind about his final journey would change the lives of many more people from all faiths, from all backgrounds, and from all over the world.
In the last two months of his life, Joseph Cardinal Bernardin made it his ultimate mission to share his personal reflections and insights as a legacy to those he left behind. The Gift of Peace reveals the Cardinal’s spiritual growth amid a string of traumatic events: a false accusation of sexual abuse; reconciliation a year later with his accuser, who had earlier recanted the charges; a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and surgery; the return of cancer, now in his liver; his decision to discontinue chemotherapy and live his remaining days as fully as possible. In these pages, Bernardin tells his story openly and honestly, and shares the profound peace he came to at the end of his life. He accepted his peace as a gift from God, and he in turn now shares that gift with the world.

Joyful Pilgrimage : My Life In Community
$10.00In the tumultuous aftermath of the First World War, thousands of young Germans defied the social mores of their parents and the constricting influence of the established churches in search of freedom, social equality, nature, and community. Hiking clubs were formed and work camps organized, and hundreds of rural folk schools and communes sprang up across the country. In the 1930s, Nazism swallowed this so-called Youth Movement virtually whole.
A Joyful Pilgrimage is the engaging story of a remnant that survived: the Bruderhof, a 75-year-old community that began when the author and her husband, a well-known writer and lecturer, abandoned their affluent Berlin suburb to start a new life and venture of faith.”
At first glance a memoir, A Joyful Pilgrimage is a radical call to faith and commitment against great odds. It is also a remarkable testimony to the leading of the Spirit, which, as Emmy Arnold writes, can hold together those who believe in the daily miracle of community through thick and thin. “

Virtues Of Aging
$17.00“We are not alone in our worry about both the physical aspect of aging and the prejudice that exists toward the elderly, which is similar to racism or sexism. What makes it different is that the prejudice also exists among those of us who are either within this group or rapidly approaching it. When I have mentioned the title of this book to a few people, most of them responded, ‘Virtues? What could possibly be good about growing old?’ The most obvious answer, of course, is to consider the alternative to aging. But there are plenty of other good answers–many based on our personal experiences and observations. “

Book Of Margery Kempe
$19.00Though a familiar name, little was known about the English mystic Margery Kempe (c. 1373-c. 1440) for hundreds of years except that she had an association with the great Julian of Norwich. This all changed in 1934 with the discovery of The Book of Margery Kempe in a library where it had lain hidden for four hundred years. Finding Margery’s own story was important not just because of the light it shed on her life, but it also turned out to be the first known autobiography in the English language. Even more intriguing to the experts of the day, this unique document was written by a woman.
But if anyone had expected to find her anything like her cloistered contemporary, Julian, they were in for something of a surprise. Far from being a typical holy woman, Margery Kempe was married and mother of fourteen children. Moreover, she had been a woman of substance, even running a large brewery for a time. After turning to religion, she traveled thousands of miles around the known world on pilgrimages to distant lands.
Beyond the circumstances of her life, what’s most compelling about the text is the inner Margery that emerges. Her account of spiritual awakening, far from being a blissful episode is instead full of conflict and recrimination. What good was this new way of life if it caused her such trouble? Was this really the only way to lead a holy life? Margery remained unsure of the answers. But her patience in her struggle is a wonder to behold, and an example for us today.

C S Lewis A Print On Demand Title
$29.99A compulsive writer from childhood, C. S. Lewis saw the world primarily through the medium of books. He read voraciously, and his own writing covers a broad range of genres. This timely study of C. S. Lewis casts a unique light on this beloved figure by tracing his development as a reader and a writer of books.
Lionel Adey shows how the two sides of Lewis’s personality, for which Adey adopts the motifs of “the Dreamer” and “the Mentor,” are key to understanding Lewis’s writing in its various modes. Adey describes Lewis’s early development and then devotes a chapter to each kind of writing he attempted: literary history, practical and theoretical criticism, novels for adults and for children, poetry, apologetics, essays and addresses, and letters. Throughout, Adey discusses formative biographical events in Lewis’s life, such as the death of his mother when he was nine years old. Adey concludes with an estimate of Lewis’s achievement and enduring legacy as a writer.

TOO BLESSED TO BE STRESSEDFrom her early life in Harlem, to leading New York’s oldest American Baptist church as its first female pastor, to becoming a wife and a mother, to a recent appointment on President Clinton’s Initiative on Race and Reconciliation, Dr. Suzan Johnson Cook is living proof that stress doesn’t have to stress you out. In Too Blessed to Be Stressed, Cook shares her testament of faith and proceeds through the seasons of her life, slowing down along the way to provide some of her favorite gospel hymns as well as the touching stories that are behind the songs you know and love so well.
Cook is quick to point out the many changes that will come in life – both good and bad – then focuses on the one thing that is unchanging and constant…God. He “is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). And He has blessings prepared for you – blessings that will keep you sane when the rest of the world goes crazy.

In prison, he was to lose even more-his freedom, his sanity, his dignity, his confidence in his faith, and eventually even his wife. Inmate 07407-058, one-time confidant to presidents, had hit bottom.
In the humiliation, loneliness, and abject despair of prison, Bakker gradually began to realize that he had to dig deep and face things about himself that as a free man he had been too busy to face. What were those issues? How did he face them? How was he changed? Now for the very first time, Jim Bakker tells his own story-the glory days as a televangelist, the hostile takeover the emotional breakdown. How he got to prison, his experiences behind bars, and what he learned. Jim Bakker was wrong about many things. Exactly what they were and how he came to confess them will surprise you and inspire you. This is his story.Add to cartin stock within 3-5 days of online purchase

THE GIFT OF PAIN
A world without pain? Can such a place exist? It not only can-it does. But it’s no utopia. It’s a colony for leprosy patients: a world where people literally feel no pain, and reap horrifying consequences.
His work with leprosy patients in India and the United States convinced Dr. Paul Brand that pain truly is one of God’s great gifts to us. In this inspiring story of his fifty-year career as a healer, Dr. Brand probes the mystery of pain and reveals its importance. As an indicator that lets us know something is wrong, pain has a value that becomes clearest in its absence.
The Gift of Pain looks at what pain is and why we need it. Together, the renowned surgeon and award-winning writer Philip Yancey shed fresh light on a gift that none of us want and none of us can do without.

IN THE TRENCHES
When Reggie White signed with Green Bay, he was the team’s last, best hope to bring a title back to Titletown, USA. The Packers were in dire need of some serious intimidation on the defensive line and, some would argue, a little divine intervention.Three years later, the pack was back and Reggie had led them to their 1996 Super Bowl win, making believers of everyone along the way!
For Green Bay’s Reggie White, there’s not much difference between faith, football, and everything else. Whether he’s chewing up offensive linemen on his way to his place in the Football Hall of Fame, speaking out against the racism and injustice of fire-bombings in black churches including his own, or planting ministries in the tough turf of inner cities, he invests the same intensity, the same commitment of will, energy, and focus.
In the Trenches is Reggie’s own fast-paced, inspiring account of his colorful, sometimes controversial career, both in the pros and in the pulpit. Packed with insights, observations, and war stories of his twelve years in the NFL-including his championship season-In the Trenches delves into the heart of an amazing athlete who balances an array of extremes: he is both beloved and feared, tough and gentle, competitive and compassionate, fierce and generous.
Better than a front-row seat on the 50-yard line, In the Trenches is your ticket to the sights, sounds, thoughts, and emotions that surround one of America’s most popular sports and one of its most respected stars.
