    • Dorothy Day : Spiritual Writings – Selected With An Introduction By Robert

      $24.00

“It is no use to say that we are born two thousand years too late to give room to Christ. Nor will those who live at the end of the world have been born too late. Christ is always with us, always asking for room in our hearts.”

Dorothy Day (1897-1980), co-founder of the Catholic Worker movement, has recently been proposed for canonization. Through her houses of hospitality, the practice of the works of mercy, and her prophetic work for peace and justice, she offered a radical witness to the gospel in action. But it was as much in her everyday life as in her public activities that she expressed her spirituality and found her path to holiness. This anthology explores the key themes that underlay Day’s spirituality. These begin with the call to see Christ in our neighbors, and the teaching that what we do for the poor, we do directly for him. Day’s spirituality was deeply influenced by St. Therese of Lisieux and her “Little Way” that showed the path to holiness in the daily exercise of patience, charity, and forgiveness. Dorothy extended this principle to the social dimension–the significance of all the little protests we make or fail to make. She frequently cited the “practice of the presence of God” and the “duty of delight”–the challenge to put love where there is none. She herself summed up her mission as a response to “the greatest challenge of the day” “How to bring about a revolution of the heart, a revolution which has to start with each one of us?”

      $16.95

This book of Advent reflections treats the nitty-gritty of trying to live authentically in a world that is ordered to contradict the message of God-with-us, of God’s hands-on love and involvement in our lives. Each pithy reflection reminds us why humanity needed and still needs Christmas. One unique aspect of the book is that the reflections do not end on Christmas Day. Reflections for each of the Twelve Days of Christmas allow readers to soak in the meaning, comfort, and joy of Christmas.

    • Celestial Web : Buddhism And Christianity – A Different Comparison

      $55.00

A leading scholar of religion applies a new method of interfaith understanding to Buddhist-Christian comparative theology providing rich new insights for students and scholars alike.

In his ground-breaking Gifford Lectures, published as Religious Pluralism & Interreligious Dialogue, Perry Schmidt-Leukel introduced his “fractal” theory of religions, challenging the tendency to distinguish religious traditions as discrete entities without acknowledging the wide variety within them, varieties essentially reproduced in different religious traditions.

After offering an introduction to this new methodology to comparative religion, Schmidt-Leukel, in The Celestial Web, applies this method to a comparison between Buddhism and Christianity. Some of the points of comparison include their respective approaches to the world, ultimate reality, the “dark side” of human existence, and salvation/liberation in terms of the figures mediating it.

Stereotypical approaches often treat these traditions as opposites, for instance, positing that Buddhism embraces an impersonal absolute, whereas Christianity affirms the primacy of one’s relationship with a personal God. Yet the fractal approach, which examines “intra-religious” varieties within the two traditions, reveals surprising points of congruence.

    • Green Saints For A Green Generation

      $30.00

Young scientists, sisters, and theologians of the “green generation” reflect on “saints” canonized and not who offer hope and inspire us towards ecological action.

“In the community of saints, all together are companions in memory and hope. Together, all together, they are becoming something strange and growing and great, instruments of change. Green Saints for a Green Generation taps beautifully into this dynamic for the sake of our suffering Earth, which cries out for no less.” From the Foreword by Elizabeth A. Johnson, CSJ

In Laudato Si’ Pope Francis established care for creation as one of the central themes of Catholic social teaching. Yet that ecological consciousness has yet to take root en masse among the Catholic faithful. In Green Saints for a Green Generation young Catholic women on “saints” canonized and not who connected their faith to concern for the earth.

The writers include a wide range of figures, from the traditional, such as Sts. Clare of Assisi, Ignatius of Loyola, and Marguerite Bourgeoys, to contemporary figures like Thomas Merton, author Toni Morrison, and the Martyrs of the Amazon. By connecting these key figures to environmental responsibility, the contributors encourage the not-yet informed to become active, inviting younger generations to join the ecological movement, to take taking on the responsibility from their elders, and to shoulder the ecological burden for themselves.

    • For My People 40th Anniversary Edition

      $35.00

“Unless we look honestly at our past, it is unlikely that we shall know what to do in the present for the shaping a creative Black future. “-James H. Cone

Originally published in 1984, James Cone’s For My People remains an important landmark in the development of Black Theology. While tracing the origins of the movement, its relation to the Black Church, its engagement with other liberation theologies from the Global South, and the emergence of Womanist theology, he also offered telling reflections on the path ahead.

Assessing this work, the great scholar C. Eric Lincoln observed: “For My People spares neither kith nor kin, but addresses itself to the whole range of factors in North American religion that make for the traditional black church/white church dichotomy, and the spiritual and social consequences that attend it. For My People is a strong commentary on both the role and the vitality of black theology, as well as on the pervasiveness of the problems that sustain the need for it.”

In a new foreword, Josiah Young, who finished his PhD with Cone at Union Theological Seminary and now teaches at Wesleyan Theological Seminary in Washington, DC, reflects on the significance of this work within the corpus of Cone’s writing, and assesses the ongoing relevance of this work for the life of the Black Church, the ongoing project of Black and Womanist Theology, and the liberating application of the Gospel to our world today.

      $9.95

“The certainty that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. This is the heart of Christian hope.”

In Pope Francis’ proclamation for the Jubilee of 2025, he encourages all of us to be signs of hope to the world. While we may not always feel optimistic about the future, we are called to be renewed in hope and to press forward in our Christian lives.

He reminds us that as we do, we will also revive our trust in the Church, in our relationships, and in our ability to shine the light of Christ with those who most need it.

Be encouraged and lifted by this proclamation of hope!

    • Young Adult Playbook

      $24.93

The Young Adult Playbook goes where other life design books refuse to go: it asks deep questions about what constitutes a happy life. After decades of listening to their students, Anna Moreland and Thomas Smith name the underlying desires in young adults: while searching for a lucrative career, they long for meaningful work; their social media and gaming practices point to a deeper yearning for intimacy; and their leisure habits have been crushed under the productivity machine. This book helps them unlock their deepest desires. It offers practical strategies to improve habits. And it leads them to recover activities lost from childhood. The book is threaded with the real voices of young adults who have found their way out of this rough terrain. These offer much needed models of hope, providing a concrete map through unprecedented challenges. Journal exercises throughout the chapters tailor the strategies for each individual reader.

Plenty of books diagnose the ills of this digital age. Few offer a pathway out of these challenges. As caring and effective college professors, Moreland and Smith have spent decades rescuing students from this impoverished landscape. In this book they attempt to reach the students they can’t teach.

    • Vessels Of Love

      $16.00

Have you ever thought of yourself as a “vessel of love?” This image speaks to what I envision for the elderhood years. The vast life experiences of the past provided countless opportunities for our love to grow and mature. The persons we have known, what we have done or had done to us, the beliefs stretching our minds and hearts, what we gained and what we shed, the results of our choices and decisions, our deliberate participation in the evolving history of the world–all this and more we bring with us into the final decades.

During this lifetime, whether we’ve been aware or not, a Presence of immeasurable love has been flowing through those experiences, quietly filling the vessel of our inner being. Like vats of matured wine, our ripened goodness has readied itself to move outward. The Beguine mystic, Mechthild of Magdeburg, trusted that “the great flood of divine love never ceases. …It flows on and on effortlessly and sweetly and without failing until, finally, our tiny vessel becomes full and spills over.” Now is the efficacious time to tend “our tiny vessel” so this graced goodness strengthens in us and benefits the life of those we encounter

    • Principles Of Catholic Theology Book 3

      $125.00

What if anything can human beings know about God, either by way of philosophical reasoning or by divine revelation? How does the mystery of the Incarnation illuminate our understanding of the nature and mystery of God and the nature and destiny of the human person? The essays in this book explore topics pertaining to the nature of God, apophatic theology, divine simplicity and the holy Trinity, divine beauty, and the beauty of creation. The book also contains a series of speculative considerations of Christology: Why did God become human? How ought we understand the two natures of Christ and the topic of the communication of idioms (attribution of both divine and human properties to one person)? There is also a sustained treatment of Jesus’ human knowledge and voluntary freedom. Did Jesus understand his own lordship and his unity with the Father and the Holy Spirit, and if so, how? Did Christ’s human will always accord with the divine will, and what significance does this idea have for our understanding of the redemption affected by Christ for the whole human race? Through these explorations, principles drawn from Thomas Aquinas and from Thomistic tradition are taken into account as key resources for the adjudication of contemporary theological challenges.

Principles of Catholic Theology, Book 3 is a continuation of Fr. Thomas Joseph White’s collection of essays, extending over a range of fundamental topics in Catholic dogmatic theology.

    • Back In 7

      $19.99

This is the sixth book in a series of seven with a breakthrough exegesis of the Book of Revelation. This book covers 22 “signs of the times” of Jesus’ return and of the end of the age which we are supposed to recognise them when we see them. However, 10 have already happened in the last 50-100 years and 10 more are happening around us today. This leaves only two to come and one is the actual, visible return of Christ. We need to catch up.

The Book of Revelation reveals seven of these signs – trumpets them so to speak – which any 1st century Jewish teenager would have easily recognised as an extraordinary, world-wide repeat of the fall of Jericho. In that day c. 1400 BC when the seven trumpets sounded, “the walls came a-tumblin’ down” as we still sing today, opening the way for the children of Israel into the Promised Land; in our day, the seventh trumpet blast is about to destroy the defences of the whole world and the meek will inherit it, renewed.

Graeme seeks answers to questions few think to ask: where in the Old Testament did John find all of his images and metaphors, and what did they mean there? Why does God choose the signs that He does? Why seals, trumpets, and bowls? What else would a 1st century Jewish teenager have already known and readily recognised? This book offers the answers.

      $16.95

The times are tough — we need the help of St. Michael and all the holy angels more than ever! Award-winning author Marge Steinhage Fenelon has written an excellent introduction to devotion to St. Michael, especially by praying the Chaplet of St. Michael. The Archangel himself made three promises to all who faithfully pray the Chaplet in his honor: an escort of nine angels chosen from each of the nine choirs of angels when approaching Holy Communion; his continual assistance and that of all the angels throughout life; and, after death, deliverance from Purgatory for themselves and all their relations. The Chaplet includes nine salutations (like decades of the Rosary), each addressed to one of the choirs, and each asking for a particular grace. We all should be concerned about the influences of evil because they are real. But we should never fear them because God is with us always and assists us through His grace and through His heavenly helpers, the Angels and Archangels. Discover the peace and security that lies in praying the Chaplet of St. Michael. Stand strong against sin, temptation, and the influence of evil and grow in holiness and wisdom. May St. Michael and the Heavenly Angels guide and protect us always!

      Ecology & Justice Series

Traditional forms of devotion to the Sacred Heart, also known as the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have waned among Catholics in recent decades. Here, Mary Frohlich, a sister of the Sacred Heart, seeks to reinterpret this traditional devotion as central to Christian spirituality in the 21st century. Facing our impending ecological disaster she sets out to discover the Heart of God as truly the heart of all creation.

Drawing upon recent theologies that have embraced the “new animism” that regards every being including humans as a node in webs of living relationality, this book chooses twelve themes relevant to the concerns and needs of today’s world and explores what story of the Heart of God may be told in relation to each one.

Words of Christ from approved private revelations describe the Holy Face Devotion as “the most beautiful work under the sun” and “the greatest source of grace second to the sacraments.” Zuzolo further reveals:

*The Miracle of the Vatican, in which the Holy Face image became enlivened, serving as catalyst for the related wonder-working at the hands of Ven. Leo Dupont.

*The woman in the Gospel who was designated by Christ in private revelations as the model of reparation to His wounded Countenance – and whose “reward” prefigured that which He promises for devotees of the Holy Face Devotion.

*How reparation to the Holy Face relates to the Holy Sacrament of the Altar and is complementary to the Sacred Heart and Divine Mercy devotions.

*How St. Joan of Arc was the forebearer of the Holy Face Devotion in her dramatic assistance of the preservation of Catholicism in France.

*How the Holy Face Devotion serves as an antidote to communism and modernism.

The Holy Face Devotion, Zuzolo explains, was bestowed by Christ “as a new pledge of mercy.” Its graces flowing though “Our Lady of the Holy Name of God” and its preference by God to all other devotions together give the affectionate title “Mother of All Devotions” dual significance.

In our time of heightened sin and darkness, the Holy Face Devotion is a means of imploring the Countenance of Christ to “turn toward us” and restore life and light to the world through conversion of the masses. Unlike any other, the Holy Face Devotion is centered on reparation to the Godhead Itself. In recompense, Our Lord promises to imprint His Image, the very “seal of the Divinity,” upon the soul of the devotee. Practicing this devotion is therefore an invaluable aid to our individual salvation, as well as that of our brethren. It is spiritual armament

    • From Union Square To Rome

      $22.00

      Preface by Robert Ellsberg

      With a New Foreword by

      Pope Francis

“‘Praise God’ is the title of this letter. For when human beings claim to take God’s place, they become their own worst enemies.”

In Laudato Si’, his historic encyclical of 2015,Pope Francis firmly established ecological concerns as central to the agenda of Catholic Social Teaching. Along with a spiritual framework on care for creation, he outlined such issues as climate change, biodiversity, and the peril facing our oceans, and offered a comprehensive guide to integral ecology.

Now, comes a shorter but even more urgent call: Laudate Deum, which focuses specifically on the climate crisis. As Erin Lothes Biviano writes in her introduction, Pope Francis here writes as a prophet, priest, poet, and most of all “a pastor, deeply concerned for people throughout the world, and above all for the poor.” Disappointed that not enough has been done in the intervening years, Francis addresses the irreversible effects of increasing global temperatures, the decrease in ice sheets, and other signs of the times. He critiques the “technocratic paradigm,” the ongoing addiction to a fossil-fuel economy, and the “weaknesses of international politics,” while leveling particular criticism at those who sow resistance and confusion.

With selections in this edition from Laudato Si’ that focus on pastoral, theological, and spiritual themes, Laudate Deum is a call to face the preeminent crisis of our times and to draw on all our spiritual wisdom, scientific knowledge, and political will to meet the challenge.

Father Ed is the first biography of Father Edward Dowling, SJ (1898-1960), whose guidance transformed Alcoholics Anonymous co-founder Bill Wilson’s life and deepened the spirituality of the twelve-step movement. Trained as a journalist, Dowling was always drawn to those who were suffering–a sympathy enhanced by his own crippling infirmities–which led him to embrace the A.A. approach to healing in community. Father Ed is a portrait of the kind of priest Pope Francis has extolled as a “shepherd with the smell of the sheep.”

    • Lead With Humility

      $19.99

How did a relatively unknown priest from Argentina rise so quickly from obscurity to one of the top leaders of the twenty-first century? The answer lies in his humility, as well as the simple principles that have sprung from it.

In the years since his election to the highest position in the Catholic Church, Pope Francis has breathed life into an aging institution, reinvigorated a global base, and created real hope for the future. His early accomplishments have been so remarkable that in 2014, Fortune magazine awarded the top spot of their coveted World’s Greatest Leaders list not to a captain of industry or political leader but to the new pontiff.

Lead with Humility explores 12 of these principles and shows how other leaders and managers across a broad spectrum can adapt them for the workplace with just as impressive results as our great pope has. These invaluable principles include:

*Don’t stand over your employees–sit down with them
      *Don’t judge–assess
*Take care of people, not lobbies
      *Go where you are needed
      *Temper ideology with pragmatism
      *Don’t change–reinvent!

Even just a few years in, it is clear to all that Pope Francis’s ability to inspire the world is unprecedented in modern times. Lead with Humility reveals the power of his methods, and helps anyone lead with the humility, grace, and authenticity that has elevated the pope to where he is today and had a direct impact in inspiring everyone and everything around him.

    • CEst La Confiance

      $6.95

In his apostolic exhortation C’Est La Confiance (“It Is Confidence”), Pope Francis reflects on Saint Therese of Lisieux on the 150th anniversary of her birth. The title of the document is taken from words used by Saint Therese in a letter to a Carmelite sister expressing her full confidence in the merciful love of God. As she stated, “It is confidence and nothing but confidence that must lead us to Love.”

Therese (1873-1897), popularly known as the “Little Flower,” is one of the best known and most beloved saints. Pope Francis writes that “[w]e would do well to delve more deeply into her message” shared in her Story of a Soul as well as the example she set forth with her “little way” of life — the path of trust and love.

“Therese, for her part, wished to highlight the primacy of God’s action; she encourages us to have complete confidence as we contemplate the love of Christ poured out to the end,” Pope Francis writes. “With confidence, the wellspring of grace overflows into our lives, the Gospel takes flesh within us and makes us channels of mercy for our brothers and sisters.”

    • Commentary On The General Instruction Of The Roman Missal

      $64.95

2008 Catholic Press Association Award Winner!

The 2002 Institutio Generalis Missalis Romani (IGMR) comes at an important moment in the history of Roman Catholicism. The Church has come through the dramatic reforms of Vatican II and more than a generation has engaged in the contemporary liturgical practices. New churches have been built and texts and songs written that reflect the post ‘Vatican II approach to liturgy. In view of these many changes there are yet concerns about what norms best articulate the liturgical vision embedded in the documents of Vatican II and what directives are most appropriate for shaping the full, active, and conscious participation of the faithful.

This commentary by members of the Catholic Academy of Liturgy is attentive to these concerns. While maintaining a balanced view of the revisions, the authors provide thoughtful analysis of the theological, pastoral, and ecclesial implications of the 2002 IGMR. Several prefatory chapters reflecting on the overall significance of the current Instruction are followed by a concise and meaningful chapter-by-chapter commentary.

In addition to the full text of the Instruction in Latin and English, readers will find a varied and rich commentary by top liturgical scholars. No single author’s viewpoint dominates, and yet the authors offer a consistent, readable text for everyone interested in the current state of liturgy in the Catholic Church.

    • Auschwitz And Absolution

      $29.00

Few people know that in the face of his execution, the notorious Rudolf Hoss, the Commandant for Auschwitz, met with a Polish Jesuit priest, Fr. Wladyslaw Lohn. Hoss made a confession to Fr. Lohn for approximately four hours, and from Fr. Lohn he received communion. This compelling account of a secret and sacramental meeting not only tells what happened but seventeen Christian and Jewish scholars offer a critical challenge to, or celebration of Christian notions of forgiveness.

We have access to Hoss’s confession by way of selections from his published memoirs. Fr. Lohn said almost nothing about his encounter and certainly nothing about the confession itself. In addition to writing a thorough introduction to this encounter, in order to contemplate the priest’s thoughts, James Bernauer has composed a work of imagination, a diary of how this Jesuit might have scrutinized this meeting. Bernauer’s hope is that, in addition to giving a sense of a historical encounter, the reader will perform their own imaginative reflection on the issues. Throughout the work, the limitations on religious absolution of sin are heightened by recall of alternative Christian practices (historical and contemporary), as well as Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s warnings about “cheap grace.”

Prothro fleshes out the patterns in which God’s people in the Old and New Testaments approach the merciful God, confess, and are forgiven and called to reengage their relationship with God by growing in faith and love through God’s ministry of grace.

Series editors are Timothy C. Gray and John Sehorn. Gray and Sehorn teach at the Augustine Institute Graduate School of Theology, which prepares students for Christian mission through on-campus and distance-education programs. Gray is also president of the Augustine Institute.

    • Theology Of Liberation 50th Anniversary Edition

      $32.00

“It would be difficult to name another theological book these past five decades that has been more influential, has inspired more believers and non-believers alike to think differently about the Christian faith, and has engendered so much controversy.” So begins Michael E. Lee’s introduction to this 50th anniversary edition of the classic work that signaled a new style of doing theology.

The theological project launched in this book was, as Fr. Gutierrez wrote, “based on the gospel and the experiences of men and women committed to the process of liberation in the oppressed land of Latin America.” It was “born of the experience of shared efforts to abolish the current unjust situation and to build a different society, freer and more human.” Yet its influence was quickly felt around the world, inspiring numerous offshoots, as well as provoking critical reactions, both inside and outside the Church.

A Theology of Liberation has won wide acclaim as one of the most influential works of Christian theology of the last century. Yet Gutierrez himself concluded the book by noting that any theology of liberation “is not worth one act of genuine solidarity with exploited social classes. They are not worth one act of faith, love, and hope committed . . . in active participation to liberate humankind from everything that dehumanizes it and prevents it from living according to the will of God.”

“The nativity scene is like a living Gospel rising up from the pages of sacred Scripture. As we contemplate the Christmas story, we are invited to set out on a spiritual journey, drawn by the humility of the God who became man in order to encounter every man and woman. We come to realize that so great is his love for us that he became one of us, so that we in turn might become one with him.” Pope Francis

On the 800th anniversary of St. Francis’s original nativity, Pope Francis gives to the world this stirring call to come to the manger and encounter Christ anew.

Written with his beloved down to earth style, Pope Francis tells the story of Christmas through the lens of the different characters of the Nativity scene. This book, in English for the first time, is destined to be a perennial Christmas classic.
