    • Whats Church All About

      $18.95

This book explores the real questions that young people ask, including their negative and sometimes irreverent questions. It then provides four supplementary chapters based on advanced questions for adults and a vision for the Church of the future. It uses real stories to flesh out the intentions of Scripture and Church teaching, drawing also on contemporary culture and learning. It avoids Church-talk that means nothing to young people, but also unwraps the Church’s hidden treasures in an accessible way. The book has been influenced by both the recent synod on youth and the current discussions in the Plenary Council of the Church in Australia.

    • Against War : Building A Culture Of Peace

      $20.00

From the beginning of his papacy, Pope Francis has made concern and action for peace and nonviolence one of his signature themes. From his travels to Iraq and other war-torn regions to his prophetic homilies in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, he has called the world to pursue a different path. Now, with the recent crisis in the Ukraine, his powerful voice is more prophetic and necessary than ever.

“Faced with the images of death that come to us from Ukraine, it is difficult to hope. Yet there are seeds of hope. There are millions who do not aspire to war, who do not justify war . . . . Millions of young people who are asking us to do everything possible and seemingly impossible to stop the war, to stop all wars. It is in thinking first of all of them, of young people and children that we must repeat together: Never again war! And together we must commit ourselves to building a world that is more peaceful because it is more just, where it is peace that triumphs and not the folly of war; justice, and not the injustice of war; mutual forgiveness, and not the hatred that divides and makes us see the other, the person who is different from us, as an enemy.” –Pope Francis

    • Sermons On The Song Of Songs Volume 2

      $29.95

Taking up Saint Bernard’s unfinished sermon-commentary, Gilbert ruminates on verse 3:1-5:10 in forty-eight sermons, leaving the task to be finished by John of Ford.
This volume contains sermons 16 through 32.

To encounter a person who makes holiness attractive is an enviable experience. Such a person was Gilbert of Hoyland, abbot of the Cistercian monastery of Swineshead in Lincolnshire, a friend of Aelred of Rievaulx, and the continuator of the sermons on the Song of Songs begun by Bernard of Clairvaux.

When the great saint of Clairvaux died in 1153, his sermon commentary had reached only the first four verses of chapter three of the Canticle. Gilbert took up the task, but left the commentary unfinished at his death. It was brought to completion by another English abbot, John of Ford.

Those who know and admire Bernard’s eloquence and contemplative insight will enjoy making the acquaintance of his successors. While conscious of continuing Bernard’s work and remaining true to his spirit, they infused their sermons with their own personalities and shared their own rich experiences of God. As Lawrence C. Braceland says in his introduction to this first English translation of Gilbert’s work, ‘Gilbert is an experience. He has found the Beloved.’

    • Forming Intentional Disciples (Expanded)

      $19.95

How can we transmit a living, personal Catholic faith to future generations? By coming to know Jesus Christ, and following him as his disciples.

As we emerge from a pandemic into a post-Christian world, these are times of immense challenge and enormous opportunity for the Catholic Church in the United States. Consider these statistics:

*Fully 10 percent of all adults in America are ex-Catholics.

*Nearly three-quarters of young Catholics think that they could be a good Catholic without going to Mass every Sunday.

*Catholic marriages have declined by almost two thirds since 1969, even as the number of Catholics in the United States has grown significantly.

*Only one third of Catholics believe that the bread and wine actually become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ at the consecration during Mass.

If the Church is to reverse these trends, the evangelizers must first be evangelized. In other words, Catholics in the pew must make a conscious choice to know and follow Jesus before they can draw others to him.

Ten years after it was first published, Forming Intentional Disciples is still helping scores of Church leaders, parish staff, and all Catholics transform parish life from within. World-renowned author and speaker Sherry Weddell leads you through the steps that will help Catholics enter more deeply into a relationship with God and the river of apostolic creativity, charisms, and vocation that flow from that relationship for the sake of the Church and the world.

She draws directly from her experience equipping everyday Christians to know their own Christian tradition more thoroughly and to engage thoughtfully with separated Christians down the street and around the corner.

    • Cardinal Virtues In Focus Second Edition

      $37.43

If you could time travel and start life all over again, how would you live it? We all have past regrets, but also lessons learned. Unless we develop good habits, we fall into either excesses or defects. Whether it’s about work, food, relationship, health, sex, or business, we need to make right choices.

Classical Greek philosophy and Christian Ethics point to us the tools we need to live a good and righteous life: prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. These are called cardinal virtues (Latin cardo-hinge) for they serve as the foundation of a good moral life.

At a time when moral relativism is the order of the day, when the sense of sin is somehow lost, we need to go back to the basics. The book you hold in your hands takes up this task. Deep and engaging, it illustrates the moral principles with down-to-earth examples, showing the perennial relevance of the cardinal virtues. Beyond that, the author invites the reader to take a moral stand in life.

      $34.00

In an attempt to reclaim mindfulness from the commercial and corporate juggernaut it has become and to demonstrate its usefulness in spiritual (including Christian) life, the author incorporates insights from retreats she has attended at top meditation/mindfulness centers and from interviews with key leaders in the field. This is a spiritual manifesto about the perils and promise of the contemporary mindfulness movement, in which Stearns exposes some of the ways in which mindfulness meditation has been coopted in Western culture as a tool for individualism and consumerism, revealing new possibilities as mindfulness tools are interwoven with ethical and spiritual practices. Drawing from stories of her own spiritual journey as a mindfulness teacher, professor, and minister, interviews with mindfulness teachers and practitioners, and critical analysis using gender and race theory, she invites readers into a deeper understanding of mindfulness and its potential for communal liberation.

    • Extravagant Love : The Self-Emptying Of Jesus

      $10.95

The theme of the book is the self-outpouring in love, or the kenosis, of Jesus Christ. The kenosis of the Son of God is at the heart of the identity of the Sisters of Jesus of Nazareth, for whom these reflections were initially composed. In baptism we are all plunged into the self-emptying life of Jesus and are called to live out this way of love in whatever situations we find ourselves. It is not surprising, then, that while the book was originally written to benefit a particular religious community it is, in fact, deeply significant to all followers of Jesus. Extravagant Love is not a sustained treatise on the kenosis of the Son of God. The mystery is too great for that. Rather, Ruth Burrows draws together scriptural and theological insights and her own lived experience of over seventy years as a Carmelite nun to offer various streams into the unfathomable ocean of God’s self-giving, ecstatic love. Each reflection is intended to begin in reading and to continue in prayerful pondering and contemplative wonder.

      $18.95

Finding Flow provides readers with a simple process to reclaim a close, playful relationship with God. This book adds a spiritual element to the current discussions by psychologists, athletes, and creatives about “flow,” which author brian plachta defines as being one with the Divine Spirit who opens our hearts, allowing us to experience inner peace, balance, and wholeness. Finding Flow offers doable spiritual practices organized around: 1. Solitude: establishing rituals to spend daily “quiet time” to deepen our relationship with God 2. Spiritual reading: delving into books that teach and inspire 3. Community: surrounding ourselves with people who nudge us to grow 4. Contemplative Action: discovering our unique gifts and talents and using them to make the world a better place These practices derive from the tradition of Saint Benedict, a fifth-century father of the Church who required his monks to establish a Rule of Life consisting of daily balance between prayer and work (ora et labora). Finding Flow takes Benedict’s timeless wisdom, recrafts it with modern language and personal stories, and makes the monk’s wisdom accessible to today’s readers.

    • Let Us Dream

      $17.00

In this uplifting and practical book, written in collaboration with his biographer, Austen Ivereigh, the preeminent spiritual leader explains why we must-and how we can-make the world safer, fairer, and healthier for all people now.

In the COVID crisis, the beloved shepherd of over one billion Catholics saw the cruelty and inequity of our society exposed more vividly than ever before. He also saw, in the resilience, generosity, and creativity of so many people, the means to rescue our society, our economy, and our planet. In direct, powerful prose, Pope Francis urges us not to let the pain be in vain.

He begins Let Us Dream by exploring what this crisis can teach us about how to handle upheaval of any kind in our own lives and the world at large. With unprecedented candor, he reveals how three crises in his own life changed him dramatically for the better. By its very nature, he shows, crisis presents us with a choice: we make a grievous error if we try to return to some pre-crisis state. But if we have the courage to change, we can emerge from the crisis better than before.

Francis then offers a brilliant, scathing critique of the systems and ideologies that conspired to produce the current crisis, from a global economy obsessed with profit and heedless of the people and environment it harms, to politicians who foment their people’s fear and use it to increase their own power at their people’s expense. He reminds us that Christians’ first duty is to serve others, especially the poor and the marginalized, just as Jesus did.

Finally, the Pope offers an inspiring and actionable blueprint for building a better world for all humanity by putting the poor and the planet at the heart of new thinking. For this plan, he draws not only on sacred sources, but on the latest findings from renowned scientists, economists, activists, and other thinkers. Yet rather than simply offer prescriptions, he shows how ordinary people acting together despite their differences can discover unforeseen possibilities.

Along the way, he offers dozens of wise and surprising observations on the value of unconventional thinking, on why we must dramatically increase women’s leadership in the Church and throughout society, on what he learned while scouring the streets of Buenos Aires with garbage-pickers, and much more.

Let Us Dream is an epiphany, a call to arms, and a pleasure to read. It is Pope Francis at his most personal, profound and passionate. With this book and

Leonardo Boff was one of the foundational voices of Latin American liberation theology. He went on to enlarge his perspective by integrating an option for the poor with an “option for the earth,” as well as drawing on insights from world religions, indigenous spirituality, the new cosmology, and feminist thought. This book, written from the perspective of his 80th birthday, overviews the principles themes of his work beginning with the role of dreams-the capacity to imagine alternatives-before returning to reflection on God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, the Church, ecotheology, a “universal ethic for the common good,” and spirituality.

Upon coming to the United States to pursue graduate studies and then to embark on training as a Jesuit, Haitian-born Patrick Saint-Jean discovered something he had not known before: racism. “I learned I am a Black man–and that America, including the Society of Jesus here in this country, is white space where people of color are not welcome. This direct experience of racism became a crucible for me.” In describing this painful journey, which included becoming aware of the ambiguous history of his own Jesuit order, Saint-Patrick embarked on a fresh reading of The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. The basic principles of Jesuit formation–the “discernment of spirits,” the examination of conscience, the imaginative identification with Jesus in his sufferings, death, and resurrection–became an entry to his own journey of hope and resurrection. These principles and practices, he concludes, hold promise of conversion and healing for a church and a society still caught in the crucible of racism.

      $13.99

Prayer 101 is both an introduction and a complete course on reaching out to God for His mercy or strength. Teresa A. Jones addresses seemingly simple questions like What is Prayer? but delves deeply into why and how we seek intercession from heaven for love and guidance.

Using real life examples, Jones applies the lessons of the Bible and dissects the intricacies of prayers we sometimes repeat from rote memorization. With a complete vocabulary of the elements of prayer, and reflections following each chapter, readers will find themselves drawn into more spiritual communications.

In the Scriptures, God repeatedly called his people to pray and He continues to call us today. This connection with God can take many different forms; seeking, talking, listening, meditating, crying out, interceding, and more. Not only are there several forms for prayer, there are many ways of understanding these very words and of putting them into practice.

It affirms black strivings for freedom as consistent with divine will despite those strivings’ branding as iconoclastic and ungodly by the white Christian establishment.

    • Beckoning : A Novel

      $19.95

Tabby Long is a non-Christian girl in a Catholic school whose world gets turned upside down when her dad, who has never been a man of faith, experiences a miraculous healing on Good Friday. Her father’s dramatic religious conversion alienates her mother, who deserts the family. In her struggle to understand what has happened to her family, Tabby follows the suggestion of her school’s religion teacher, and she begins spending time reading Scripture while in Eucharistic Adoration.

Following the practice taught by Saint Ignatius of Loyola, she inserts herself into the biblical stories she reads. Through this process, she “time travels” to first-century Jerusalem, where she is Tabitha Longinus, the daughter of the centurion Gaius Cassius Longinus, who pierces the side of the crucified Jesus, incurs a spontaneous healing, and undergoes immediate conversion. Tabitha is a Gentile girl with Jewish friends and a mother who can’t accept her husband’s newfound (and dangerous) faith.

When her mother flees to Rome and her father retires from the army and leaves Jerusalem, Tabitha finds herself alone in the holy city, her life in jeopardy for having entered a part of the Temple that is off-limits to Gentiles. She is drawn into belief in Jesus through her friends who are close to the Apostles, even as she struggles to devise a way to save and reunite her family — a duty that consumes her in her modern-day life as well.

Tabitha’s experiences are rooted in the stories found in the first ten chapters of the Acts of the Apostles. On the last of several days of her Scripture meditations, Tabby emerges from Adoration with a newfound faith and clarity about how her family can be reunited and healed, all with the help of the Lord.

    • Immersion : A Pilgrimage Into Service

      $22.95

Immersion: A Pilgrimage into Service is a resource for those discerning or undergoing an immersive service experience or post-graduate volunteer service program. It utilizes recent Catholic social thought, Scripture, an Ignatian paradigm of service-reflection and Christian spirituality. This book helps readers to identify and navigate their innermost call to service by providing tools for reflection and discernment. It also challenges harmful attitudes that can reinforce unhealthy uses of privilege and power and perpetuate historically deleterious impacts on host communities through cultural and racial hegemony. A book which invites reflection on the motives, potential pitfalls, and outcomes of immersion and service programs is timely as the United States grapples with the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic and a greater sense of the need for racial justice. Despite the vast resources used to sustain immersion and post-graduate volunteer programs, there are few resources to guide students, their parents, team leaders, discerning post-graduate volunteer participants, and program directors through the personal, social, and spiritual transformation that is sparked by these experiences. Immersion: A Pilgrimage into Service fills that void.
