    • H Richard Niebuhr

      $17.99

Abingdon Pillars of Theology is a series for the college and seminary classroom designed to help students grasp the basic and necessary facts, influence, and significance of major theologians. Written by noted scholars, these books will outline the context, methodology, organizing principles, primary contributions, and key writings of people who have shaped theology as we know it today.

Dr. Donald Shriver tells us that H. Richard Niebuhr wrote about God in a serious yet joyous exploration. This book summarizes Niebuhr’s faith journey as seen through the lens of his major works. While Neibuhr did mean to move his readers to think, struggle, argue, and even pray, he expected nothing less from himself. It is the hope of the author that by reading this book, readers will be better prepared to travel a path of their own.

In his book, GOD WHO ARE YOU? David Huyard tells the story of the struggle their family encountered in leaving the Amish and everyone they knew, to pursue God’s call upon their lives. At the age of twelve David had a vision of preaching to thousands of black people, that vision became real some thirty years later while he was preaching on the island of Antigua, in the West Indies when he suddenly realized the 5,000 estimated crusade crowd before him was exactly what he saw while working in his father’s cornfield in Lancaster County Pennsylvania.

“The Heart of Man; God’s Target – Part One” is Harold’s autobiography. It is a captivating account beginning with the author’s parents leaving Germany at the end of World War I, and settling in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where Harold was born and raised. He became fluent in three languages, and at age twenty was drafted into the Argentinean Army. Soon thereafter, he was chosen among thousands as the interpreter for the 1952 Argentinean Equestrian Olympic Team, that toured Europe for seven months. After discharge from the Army, Harold enjoyed working for two international German corporations, where he held several management positions; but political upheaval prompted Harold to fulfill his dream to leave for the USA. Part Two outlines hindrances that prevent Christians from truly enjoying God, by failing to appropriate the power, promises and faith of Jesus Christ.

      $16.86

Growing up in a small Mississippi town Patrick dreamed of being a missionary to some exotic far away place. Through a series of disappointments, illness and heartbreak he was compelled to follow a narrow path. This would-be adventurer was being called to die to himself and live in Christ. This book is the story of the death of a dream and the birth of a vision that would become a new ministry born in suffering, carried out in simplicity and grounded in ancient roots. In a day of innovation and strategy this missionary implores us to rethink what it means to be a disciple of Christ, and calls to those who will join in a journey that takes place one step at the time. “Conformity to the image of Christ is not a prayer for a moment; rather it is a lifetime of faith and obedience that happens slowly by slowly.”

If the stars don’t shine, God is the guiding light. If the ocean fails to come home to the shore, God has a plan. If the sun ceases to rise and fall, God’s love prevails. And if a child is born among the weeds and thorns of alcoholism, God can make the garden beautiful. Through all the chaos and confusion of life, His promise of “I will never leave you or forsake you” holds true. This book is a collection of creative writings, cartoons, and inspirational insights that journeys the author’s life from toddler to present. The prevailing theme is that God is in control and showers His children with daily encouragements to love one another as He has loved us. This reminder may come from the gentleness of moonlit snowfall or the comprehension of an autistic child-but it is the great commission carried out from the broken and softened hearts of His children.

A Journey of Brokenness My first introduction to brokenness came at the young age of seven. My parent’s divorce chained our family to everyday terms such as “broken home, single parent family, and child support.” Not wanting to experience the pain, I constructed walls of determination to become a survivor. A survivor determined to “never divorce.” I discovered however, love and determination wasn’t enough when my own marriage of 29 years crumbled to infidelity. Now broken again, the walls tumbled down and forced me to embrace the pain of brokenness. Grieving the losses in my life hurt so deeply, my heart actually ached. Embracing the pain began the transformation of God’s restoration plan to set me FREE! Choices Not Chosen will: Walk you through the valley Hold you close to reality Show you God is present in times of trouble Bring another perspective of brokenness Reveal healing in surrender

    • Elizabeth Hayes : Pioneer Franciscan Journalist

      $31.18

Elizabeth Hayes (1823-1894) is a woman whose personal life and achievements are of significance in both British and North American religious, social, and literary history. Born on the Island of Guernsey, the youngest child of an Anglican schoolmaster-clergyman, she embraced the Oxford Movement, the Wantage Anglican sisterhood, Catholicism and the Franciscan movement when a neo-monastic revival found enthusiasts in both the Catholic Church and in Anglicanism.

Strongly committed to living a Franciscan way of life, as foundress, teacher, religious sister and journalist, Elizabeth’s desire for mission in foreign places fired her with a courageous determination. Concerned for the poor, she had a bold and broad vision, while her capacity to mingle comfortably with key religious and literary figures of the period in England, Paris, Rome and North America set her apart.

In the ‘age of journalism’, she ventured confidently into an arena where most women writers struggled for acknowledgement and even took on male pseudonyms in order to succeed. Many journals proved ephemeral, yet Elizabeth’s monthly periodical, published first in Minnesota, then in Georgia, and, finally, in Rome, was to endure. No minor player in Victorian Catholic journalism, she wrote, edited, published and distributed through her Sisters the first English Franciscan journal, initiated in 1874. She continued these roles for twenty-one years until her death, while her periodical itself continued for a century.

Elizabeth carved out a fresh Franciscan path that indicated how she grasped both the purpose of her life and the importance of good journalistic literature for society. Annals’ subscribers were more than readers with needs; they collaborated in a seven-hundred-year-old Franciscan way of life with its rich history, traditions and missions, and in Franciscan spirituality through her confraternity. This was the cornerstone of the ultimate success of Elizabeth’s mission through journalism, a mission that responded exactly to the needs for Catholic evangelism following the great migrant influx (1825-50) in North America.

Pink Lips and Fingertips answers this question through the life of Jeri Ivison Paholek, who was born with a rare heart defect called common ventricle and given a death sentence by the medical community. Instead of retreating inward and playing it safe to extend her years or embarking on extravagant global adventures, Jeri chose to impact the world for Christ — whether by corresponding with convicted bomber Timothy McVeigh on death row or starting a prayer stand immediately after the 9/11 attacks. Her indomitable spirit in the face of death will inspire and captivate. You will not approach life the same way after reading this book.

    • Out Of My Bone

      $40.99

The untold story of the woman who married C. S. Lewis and inspired the movie Shadowlands

When Joy Davidman died of cancer in 1960, C. S. Lewis, her husband of only four years, wrote one of the great twentieth-century classics about loss and grief. Who was the American woman about whom Lewis says in A Grief Observed, “It is incredible how much happiness, even how much gaiety, we sometimes had together after all hope was gone”? Who was this woman whose love story with Lewis became the play, and later the major movie, Shadowlands?

Although best known as Lewis’s wife, Joy Davidman was an accomplished writer in her own right, with several published works to her credit. Out of My Bone tells Davidman’s life story in her own words through her numerous letters — most never published before — and her autobiographical essay “The Longest Way Round.”

Gathered and expertly introduced by Don W. King, these letters reveal Davidman’s persistent search for truth, her curious, incisive mind (“lithe and quick and muscular as a leopard,” Lewis later said), and her arresting, sharply penetrating voice. They chronicle her journey from secular Judaism to atheism to Communism to Christianity and offer insightful glimpses into life — both literary and everyday — in the America and England of her time. Davidman also writes about the struggles of her earlier marriage to William Lindsay Gresham and of trying to reconcile her career goals with her life as mother of two sons. Most poignantly, perhaps, these letters expose Davidman’s mental, emotional, and spiritual state as she confronted the cancer that eventually took her life at age 45.

Moving and riveting, Out of My Bone reveals anew the singular woman whom C. S. Lewis deeply loved and who deeply influenced his later writings.

    • Nero

      $20.00

Nero! The name is both a shame and a shudder. In his life we are presented with an astonishing picture of human greed, cunning, and selfishness at its worst. And thanks to his prominent position, Nero’s example of monstrosity has stood as a lesson and a warning to all men since. Born of Agrippina, of whom only such a son was worthy, he ran the gamut of every human crime and folly, making the Roman Empire minister to his atrocities. When he died, escaping human vengeance at the end, he lamented that so splendid a genius should have to pass away.
This thrilling biography-written by Jacob Abbott and newly edited for younger readers-offers a glimpse into the life of this spoiled prince who became a royal monster.

Nero is part of Makers of History, a 19th century biography series by two brothers-Jacob and John S.C. Abbott. • In A Great And Noble Tradition

      $28.68

The Benedictine abbey of Solesmes in France is famous for the quality of its Gregorian chant, recordings of which are appreciated throughout the world. Nevertheless, the life of its founder, Dom Prosper Gueranger (1805-1875) is still relatively unknown. This is partly due to Gueranger himself, who never sought to promote his life story. While he published many liturgical and spiritual works, this highly personal account of his early life and events surrounding the foundation of Solesmes in 1833 was never intended for publication, and indeed was never completed. For this reason, the manuscript remained in the archives of the abbey of Solesmes for well over a hundred years. Growing recognition of its wider importance and interest led to its eventual publication in 2005, the bicentenary of Gueranger’s birth. The book is far more than a personal portrait of an interesting and innovative individual. Through the prism of events surrounding his early life as a seminarian, secular priest and then Benedictine monk, Gueranger’s account illustrates many of the wider issues at play in early nineteenth-century France and French Catholicism. Gueranger’s first-hand account of various political events under the regimes of Napoleon I, the Bourbon Restoration and Louis-Philippe has its own historical value. Above all, however, the book shows how Gueranger’s project to re-found Benedictine life in France, after its disappearance in the wake of the French Revolution, stood in relation to other currents of religious thought and monastic tradition, notably Gallicanism, Ultramontanism, the Maurists and the Cistercians. Those interested in monastic life and liturgical spirituality will further draw inspiration from Gueranger’s narration of the human relationships and mystical experiences that inspired his Benedictine vocation and subsequent life’s work. Gueranger’s lively text is also enjoyable in its own right. His optimism, determination, creativity, unwavering trust in divine providence, capacity for friendship and often humorous (and occasionally devastating) portraits of the many people whom he encountered give a particular charm and colour to his writing. Ultimately, however, this account of Gueranger’s spiritual and intellectual awakening provides impetus for a renewed contemporary appreciation of his convictions, which are of perennial value for all who are seeking God. The monastic community founded by Gueranger bears witness to the transforming power of contemplative l

    • Grief To Grace

How does someone cope with the knowledge that she almost killed her son with her own truck? How does someone recover from guilt after her little girl’s life is cut short because of a silly mother-daughter game? How does someone overcome flashbacks of a head on collision? These were the questions I had to ask after three separate automobile accidents shattered my world. The emotional pain they inflicted on me was unrelenting, causing me to cry out, “Lord, when will bad things stop happening to me?” I didn’t think I could endure the wounds caused by these tragedies, but God helped me walk through the dark valley and back into the light. He can do the same for you. With His help, you can see the sunshine again. I invite you to read my story and see how God’s grace is more than sufficient for your grief.

    • Satan Wants Me God Has Me

      $15.61

After the death by fire of my 3-1/2-year old son, our house became haunted. Voices in closets.Footsteps walking up and down stairs. Lights going off and on. I was ripe to accept Satan’s invitation to a spiritualist church, where I could visit with my dead son. Satan’s devices are subtle, disguised as God in heaven. I was Satan’s puppet for five years. Ouija boards, Tarot cards, tea leaf readings, seances, necromancers. Lev. 19:31 referred to me as a medium with familiar spirits, difiling those I channeled for. Duet 18:10-12 said I was an abomination to the Lord, as I sought information from the dead. Later, I realized these loved ones were demons. My three spirit guides were taking me down the wide road to Hell. As a child I grew up in poverty. I was molested, raped, and conceived through rape. A life of rejection has given me compassion for those going through the same thing. Being a pastor, I have asked God for the outcasts. I’m reminded of the fishermen who were unclean and stank of fish. Then Jesus said to them, “Follow me.” These men are still making history. With unconditional love, we are seeing lives change. At the end of five years serving him, Satan tried to kill me, but God saved me. Now I share my story in hopes of helping others.

    • Windows Of Saint Joseph

      $23.73

Autism is a house without doors but sometimes a window is opened. For me that window was religion. Too early in my life I was blessed to perceive religion as it really is, and though in the very depth of my self I knew that “child-abuse” didn’t apply in this case, the images that Islam and the Inquisition evoke in me were almost too horrible to bear. In a word, I was terrified of religion. How little we know what a religious experience really is – even our own. Certainly, after two years of meetings and daily masses, there was no sense of reality that my mind could provide for the content of Catholic doctrines, thereby invalidating them. I had never really noticed what the rules of Catholicism were and what typical Catholics experienced. However far I fall short of their understanding, I think my real trouble was I didn’t have a theory of mind; thus, I concluded that everybody, including the priest who had to celebrate mass, experienced what I did. The theory of the mind runs very deep. It underscores the big words: the kinds of words that make consciousness possible: self, community, freedom itself. I have indeed become conscious of my freedom. How far down would I need to dig to discover the Risen Christ?
